A Conversation about Passover with Lois Bostwick and Laurence Braude

Lois Laurie
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Lois Bostwick holds degrees from Northwestern and Columbia. She and her husband Laurence raised two children while living in places as diverse as Panama, Germany, Berkeley, and New Orleans. In Santa Monica, Lois has enjoyed careers in both teaching and real estate while performing in numerous plays. She and Laurence have shared over forty years in the Sholem community, embracing family, theater, travel, and music.
Laurence Braude grew up in Chicago, where his working-class family instilled progressive values and a love for Yiddish culture and the arts. A SAG/AFTRA actor with a background in dramatic arts and psychological counseling, Laurence found a lasting home in the Sholem Community, a secular, progressive Jewish organization. There he has served in multiple leadership roles and found deep joy in partnering with Lois, supporting his daughter’s leadership, and watching his grandchildren thrive as third-generation members.

Writing Workshop with Jean:
Pivotal Moments of Your Life
In today’s writing workshop, we are going to look backward. Participants will be asked to write about a key moment in childhood or young adulthood when they began to know who they were and what they wanted out of their lives. At these pivotal times, you may have known what career you wanted to pursue, or discovered a passion for a lifelong hobby. You may have become aware that you were fascinated by politics or science or astrology, or that you had a talent for cooking, painting or gardening.
Sharing your writing in Writing Workshop is not mandatory, but many people find that hearing their own voice reading about their thoughts out loud to others can change or deepen how they feel about their ideas. Also, hearing someone else read their writing can be quite eye-opening. Sometimes we learn something about a person we thought we knew everything about (but we didn't!). Sometimes someone else has a different way to say something that you have felt, but you haven't been able to put it into words.
All are welcome – those who love writing and do it often, those for whom writing is a chore, and everyone else!

Jean Gasca has been a member of the Church in Ocean Park for over 20 years. While she taught math and science as a career, and now as a retired teacher and current tutor, she has always turned to art, music, reading and writing for enjoyment and relaxation. She has been a member of the Church in Ocean Park choir and The Concert Singers choir in Westchester for many years. Her interest in writing as a path for relaxation and healing has deepened during the political tensions in our country. She has realized how important it is to seek to understand our feelings and values, bring order to our perception of life’s events if daily life is chaotic, and sometimes to just play with ideas for a break from “doing.”
